Three
Egyptians Charged With Spying for Israel
CAIRO,
November 13 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Three Egyptians were
arrested in Cairo six months ago on charges of spying for Israel's
foreign intelligence service, the Mossad, in a case that had been kept
secret until this week, court sources said Wednesday, November 13.
A
woman and two men are accused of spying for the Mossad in exchange for
sums of money as well as of having collaborated with the Israelis to
illegally help people cross the Egyptian-Israeli border, the sources
said.
The
accused, including a former player from Cairo’s championship-winning
soccer team Zamalek, made their first court appearance in the capital
Tuesday, November 12.
The
judge extended their detention for another 45 days, court sources
said.
Under
Egyptian law, the police can arrest suspects and detain them for
renewable periods of 45 days for up to six months, when a court must
intervene and rule on whether their detention should continue.
“The
main accused, Naglaa, was in charge of contacts with foreign parties
and Mossad, while the two others, a football player with the Zamalek
club named Mossa’ad, and an employee, carried out her orders,” a
court source said.
The
last names of the accused were not disclosed.
Magdi
Anwar Mohammed Tawfiq, a 52-year-old unemployed Egyptian man, was
sentenced June 10 in the city of Alexandria to 10 years in prison with
hard labor for attempting to carry out acts of espionage for Israel.
It
was the second such conviction this year.
On
March 23, Sherif Al-Filali, a 35-year-old Egyptian engineer, was
sentenced to 15 years with hard labor after Cairo’s high state
security court convicted him of passing military secrets to the
Mossad.
