Mahathir Slams West for Democratic “Hypocrisy”

“The impression I get is that there is no justice in the world today.”

By Kazi Mahmood, South East Asia correspondent

KUALA LUMPUR, September 30 (IslamOnline) - In a rare diatribe against the West since the September 11 attacks on the United States, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad lambasted the Western world for what he called a pack of lies and hypocrisy when it came to human rights and democracy, the Star Daily reported on Monday, September 30.

There is no more justice in the world and all talk about fair play, democracy and human rights “is sheer nonsense,” said Mahathir Mohamad.

Repeating his phrase that the world was not a nice place to live in, the Prime Minister added there was no democracy even in democratic countries. Though he did not mention those countries, he was obviously referring to the west, sources said.

Mahathir came to this conclusion after his appeals to end the siege against Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Ramallah were not followed with action. He said he had written to United States President George W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder regarding the Israeli siege.

“The impression I get is that there is no justice in the world today. If someone is disliked, then anything can be done to him even though it is unfair.

“In the case of Arafat, it looks like he is hated by certain quarters. As such, he will not get fair treatment because justice does not exist anymore in this world.

“All talk about justice is mere bunkum and hypocrisy. It is all a lie and only talk,” he told a press conference upon returning to the country on Sunday, September 29.

Mahathir insisted that all the talk about “democracy and all is sheer propaganda.”

He also dismissed the U.N. call to Israel to adhere to its call to end the siege on Arafat as ineffective.

“I don’t think it is going to be effective. That’s all,” he said.

He also said when young people in Malaysia talked about democracy, they should know that Malaysia was more democratic than most other democratic countries.

The leader was very upset with the United States and Canada when they decided last week not to renew the visas for Malaysians going to these countries.

Mahathir also lambasted the Canadians for reviewing the visa status of Malaysians, who since last week benefited from free visa entry into Canada.

On the other hand, the United States embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Monday announced new entry and exit regulations which will require some Malaysians to be specially registered, fingerprinted and photographed on entering the U.S..

In a press statement, the U.S. embassy said the country’s National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) will be expanded starting October 1 to include registration of “some Malaysians” as well as “some individuals from every country”.

“We wish to advise Malaysians to allow extra time to make travel connections after arriving at U.S. ports of entry. This new procedure may result in delays for some people entering or leaving the U.S.,” said the statement.

The embassy said the decision of which individuals will be asked to register will be based on “information about the current threat of terrorism”.
