19% of Intifada Victims Children: Report

Injured
children under 18 make up about 35,4 % of Palestinian injuries

GAZA,
July 26 (IslamOnline) - A total of 1,649 Palestinians, including 311
children, have been killed since the Palestinian Intifada against
Israeli occupation broke out in September 2000 until May 2002, the
Palestinian Statistics Center said Thursday, July 25.
The
center said that 311 children under the age of 18 were among the
victims of the 22-month-old uprising, making up 19% of the total death
toll. Children also accounted for a third of the number of injured, it
added.
The
injured children under the age of 18 make up about 35,4 % of the total
percentage during the period from 29 September 2000 to 25 April 2002,
said the report.
The
number of students killed since the start of the Intifada is 161,
while 2,404 students were killed during the same period, the report
said.
The
statistics center also said the population of the Palestinian
territories had risen to 3.4 million people at the end of 2001, with
63.7 percent living in the West Bank and 36,3 percent in the Gaza
Strip.
Refugee
children under 18 constitute 42,2% of the total number of children
residing in the Palestinian territories in 2000. 39% of them live in
the West Bank and 61% in Gaza strip.
The
report entitled “Issues and Statistics” is the fifth of its kind
about Palestinian children, and its purpose is to show various facts
conditions of those children.
The
report also presents statistics concerning the social and economic
environments surrounding the Palestinian children, and highlights the
deficiency in the sections of health, education, culture and
entertainment.
According
to the report, Palestinian children need special protection,
especially considering the toll the occupation, daily incursions, and
the Intifada have had on their lives.
