The Characters in Hijab–Ez
(pronounced hijab-ease)

Hijab-Ez (pronounced hijab-ease) is a word Rose made up to identify the group of Muslim and non-Muslim friends who joined together to support her hijab-wearing school friend, Camelia. A member of the Hijab-Ez is a girl who wears a head covering regardless of her religious beliefs.

Grandma is a new revert to Islam. Her granddaughter Rose lives next door and spends most of her time with Grandma. Rose wants to be a Muslim, but her non-Muslim father objects. So Rose is learning all she can about Islam for the day she is older and can say that she has chosen to be Muslim because she has learned the truth of Islam.

Character Descriptions:

Grandma: An older Muslimah, kind of chubby. She wears glasses perched on the end of her nose all the time. She likes to wear black, Saudi-style abayas, but large colorful hijabs (covering her chest) that are pinned beneath her chin with butterfly pins.

Rose: Short and skinny. She has blue eyes, bangs and a single long, yellow braid down her back. She loves pink and wears modest calf-length skirts and long-sleeved blouses. She is a young Christian girl who wants to be a Muslim like her Grandma. She has a very prominent sprinkling of freckles across her cheeks and nose. She wears a large bandanna on her head tied at the nape of her neck. You can see her braid and bangs.

Camelia: Rose’s Egyptian-American friend. Camelia is chubby, has light skin like her mom but very dark brown eyes like her daddy. Camelia loves bright colors but doesn’t often match them together very well. She wears a short head scarf, and a few auburn wisps of hair are always creeping out and onto her forehead. She has the habit of twisting one of the ends of her scarf when excited or upset.

Judy: Camelia’s mother. She is a Muslim revert like Grandma but has been a Muslimah for many years. Like Camelia, she loves colorful jilbabs and likes to wear different styles of head covering that always match beautifully with her jilbab. Judy has wide green eyes and is always smiling. She is of medium height and is slender, but not skinny. A bangle bracelet is often seen poking out from one of her sleeves.

Reyhannah: She is a tall thin girl whose parents emigrated from India. Reyhannah was born in the USA and is also Muslim. She loves to wear traditional Indian–Muslim coverings, and she likes orange and red colors and flower-patterned clothes that are light-weight. She has long slender fingers and wears several bangles on both wrists. Her skin tone is dark and her eyes are almost black.
