Zambian Leader's wife Says He died Unappreciated
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa was buried on Wednesday, September 4, 2008, on what would have been his 60th birthday amid accolades from fellow African leaders, but his widow said he died a sad, unappreciated man. Mwanawasa won praise for fighting corruption and modernizing Zambia's economy but himself admitted that he had failed to lift the nation of 12 million people out of crushing poverty. Mwanawasa broke the long silence of African leaders earlier this year to criticize his autocratic neighbor, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe.
