Palestinians Mark 60th Anniversary of Nakba
Palestinians in the occupied territories and in Syria mourned the 60th anniversary of the Nakba (catastrophe) of Israel's birth on Thursday, May 15, 2008, with protests, sirens, and black balloons. The protests highlighted the plight of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, 4.5 million of whom now live in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, or further afield, with many in grim camps. Mass demonstrations were held in Gaza Strip to protest Israel's blockade of the coastal territory.
