Mortality Rates
Declining in Sudan's Darfur: UN
Mortality rates in Sudan's war-torn Darfur
region have dropped significantly but the health situation
there remains precarious with many still dying of preventable
diseases, a UN official said, Wednesday 29, 2005. UN
humanitarian coordinator Manuel da Silva said a joint survey
with the government conducted between mid-May and mid-June
showed rates had fallen to around 0.8/10,000 deaths a day,
below the "crisis threshold" of 1/10,000. But he
warned that despite an improvement in the figures, "the
health of the people remains extremely fragile.
