Mortality Rates Declining in Sudan's Darfur: UN
Mortality rates in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region have dropped significantly but the health situation there remains precarious with many still dying of preventable diseases, a UN official said, Wednesday 29, 2005. UN humanitarian coordinator Manuel da Silva said a joint survey with the government conducted between mid-May and mid-June showed rates had fallen to around 0.8/10,000 deaths a day, below the "crisis threshold" of 1/10,000. But he warned that despite an improvement in the figures, "the health of the people remains extremely fragile.
