Two alpacas of the Suri family remain at the
Ministry of Agriculture premises in Lima, Peru, Tuesday, May
18, 2004. The ministry has launched a campaign to inject an
intramuscular microchip into alpacas for identification, due
to the high levels of smuggling on the Peruvian borders with
Bolivia and Chile. Around 3000 animals are smuggled annually
into neighboring countries for about US$150 and later sent to
Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland or the US for a price of
US$5000 dollars each specimen. (AFP)
