The Id Kah Mosque is located in Kashgar,
Xinjiang,
China.
The mosque
was built by Shakesimirzha
in 1422
(including structures dating back to the eighth
century) and covers 16,800 square meters.
Being the largest in China, it attracts more than 10,000
worshipers for Friday Prayers. The different buildings consist of a
prayer hall, a teaching hall, a gate tower, a pond, and some auxiliary
rooms.
It was the center of a sharp rise in tension between the
Muslim
Uighurs
and the ruling Han
Chinese in Xinjiang in 2003,
when the government decided to replace it with a motorway and a shopping
mall.
