In an unprecedented move,
IslamOnline.net (IOL) launched the first live
fatwa session inside Second Life (SL) as part
of its ongoing events in its Ramadan tent
inside the virtual world.
On Thursday, September 28,
2007, Wael Shihab, deputy managing editor of
IOL's Shari`ah Department, met with visitors
to the virtual world for 90 minutes to answer
questions they had about Islam.
"I found this to be a
wonderful experience," commented Shihab
after the session. "The questions were
sophisticated and interesting, and I enjoyed
answering them."
On the other side, the
visitors thought the service was very useful
and relevant to their needs. "This was my
favorite session," said Khawla Masala, a
regular at the tent. "The answers were of
good quality, and the session in general was
very well-managed."
The session attracted more
people than any other event held before it,
which highlighted the many questions that
Muslims in SL had to ask.
For Shihab, the highlight of
the session was the high level of
interactivity that SL offered. "It's very
different from the live fatwa sessions we have
on the website. It was good to be able to
answer questions and take any follow-up ones
straight away."
The live fatwa session is held
every week inside the virtual tent with
different muftis featured every time.
