Islamophobia is a serious
problem that has found its way from real life
into the world of Second Life, said Drowned
Pharaoh, owner of Tasneem Center for
introduction to Islam inside the virtual
world.
This came in one of the events
prepared by IslamOnline.net inside its virtual
tent in Second Life.
Pharaoh, a British Muslim,
explained how he came to encounter
Islamophobia many years ago when he was
working as a teacher. He used to carpool with
his co-workers who would spend the trip
bad-mouthing Muslims in the school.
"I think that some of the
students might have been responsible for some
of this bad image they had of Islam,"
said Pharaoh. "However, I soon realized
that must of it was to do with the
media."
The session was attended by
many Muslims from different countries around
the world. Many commented they were shocked at
the stories that Pharaoh told. He commented
that the most recent attack of Islamophobia was the attacks carried out
against IslamOnline.net's Ramadan tent where
the session was being held.
"Islamophobia inside SL
takes on one of two forms. Sometimes it's
sporadic and chaotic with no pattern, but
other times there are groups organized who
want to fight not only Islam, but any religion
in-world," explained Pharaoh.
He then went on to explain to
the audience how they should act in order to
counter Islamophobia and how to display all
the good qualities of Islam to the others.
"Islamophobia is a result
of ignorance. That is what we need to
fight."
The 60-minutes session
resulted in the creation of a special group
inside Second Life to fight Islamophobia.
Pharaoh created the group as a result to the
large demand from the audience to help
introduce Islam to non-Muslims and explain to
them what it is all about.
