The Tartars attacked Iraq, killed people, and
annihilated all aspects of culture there. They approached the Egyptian
borders. Hulagu Khan sent an envoy to the Egyptian Sultan Qutuz,
threatening him if he did not surrender to the power of the Tartars. But
the Muslim sultan resented that threat and declared jihad.
Qutuz led the army along with Emir Baibars and set out
towards `Ain Jalut. On Ramadan 15, AH 658 (September 3, 1260) war broke
out between the Muslims and the Tartars. When chaos prevailed in the
Muslim army, Qutuz took off his helmet and aroused the fighters’
enthusiasm by shouting, “O Islam!” Then he went to the forefront of
the army, where he fought against the Tartars and killed their
commander. Hence, the month of Ramadan witnessed Muslims’ victory over
the Tartars in `Ain Jalut Palestine.
