Mubarak
"is not only threatened by terrorists, but by his own
people," said the British daily.
CAIRO,
April 25, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) – The regime of Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak is caught between further repression or opening up to
more reform and risking to lose power, the Independent reported on
Tuesday, April 25.
"But
in terms of repressive security measures, it is difficult to see what
more the embattled President can do to avert future terror
attacks," wrote Anne Penketh, the daily's Diplomatic Editor.
She
maintains that Mubarak, who wants his son to succeed him, "is not
only threatened by terrorists, but by his own people."
According
to the British reporter, if Mubarak resorts to more restrictions the
"cowed" Egyptian people might endorse mounting demands for
an end to his authoritarian regime.
