German Potential Migrants May Be Tested on Holocaust

"The questions are not tough. They don't require preparation," Schäuble said.

VIENNA, March 22, 2006, (IslamOnline.net) – "What do you know about the Holocaust? Define Israel's right to exist? Are you offended when you see two homos kissing one another?"…etc. These are some of the questions in a racy test would-be immigrants in Germany may have to sit in for, also including watching sex scenes.

Hessen state has approved a 100-question test that examines the general knowledge of would-be immigrants to the European country but it will not come into effect until approved by the German parliament in June.

German state authorities said that the test package aims at giving an accurate and real portrait of the German society so that potential immigrants would not be shocked by its traditions and cultures.

In addition, immigrants will have to respond to questions on German geography, history, constitution, culture, science, sports as well as its political, judiciary and social systems.

Such a measure is seen by opposition political parties and right organizations as "impossible," saying that German citizens themselves may not be able to answer the questions.

"Who is the first German chancellor? What meeting was held in Pawel Church in Frankfort in 1848?" are some of the questions on the suggested test.

Hessen state government called other German states to adopt the test.

Ministers of Interiors of German states will meet in May to discuss the unified rules for tests of would-be migrants to resolve any controversy before endorsing the new immigration law.

German Minister of Interior Wolfgang Schäuble welcomed the Hessen state move.

"It is not abnormal to ask a would-be immigrants to prove their knowledge of the country. The questions are not tough. They don't require preparation," he was quoted by a German newspaper as saying.

From January 1 this year, would-be Muslim immigrants to the German state Baden-Wuerttemberg have been singled out for tougher questioning in a decision blasted in Berlin as discriminatory.

The interior ministry of the southern state said that potential Muslim immigrants should face a lengthy interrogation including 30 questions on their political and cultural views.

Porn Scenes

The Christian Union Party (CUP), the largest bloc in the ruling coalition, proposed to German states to make watching CDs - that include half naked women and the sexual lives of homosexuals - part of the tests for would-be immigrants.

"Some Muslim countries apply death penalty over aspects in day-to-day life that we consider normal," said Stephan Mayer, member of the CUP.

He cited short skirts and homosexual acts in public as examples of normal behavior in Germany.

Norbert Geis, a fellow party member, echoed a similar stance.

"Bathing naked in public may draw criticism. But something like this should be accepted (by immigrants) in Germany," Geis said.

The test, according to its authors, aims at giving potential immigrants an introductory notion of the German culture and what awaits them in the country which may contradicts with their traditions and beliefs.

The party's proposal comes a week after Netherlands announced that would-be immigrants to the country would have to watch a film featuring a topless woman and gay men kissing to test their readiness to learn Dutch values and liberate in the country's liberal society.

Opposition

German political parties objected the proposed procedures especially the sex scenes.

German opposition parties, chiefly Greens Party, branded the proposed measures as "nonsense".

"We don't oppose interviews (with would-be immigrants) where they get familiarized with the main principles of the German constitution, but private life is a relative issue for Germans themselves since there is no role model for it," said the Greens internal affairs expert Silke Stokar.

The Muslim Assembly in Germany also slammed the new procedures for would-be immigrants.

"We support a test on the general knowledge on Germany but we reject subjecting potential immigrants to an exam that test their loyalty to the country," said Ayman Mazeek, secretary-general of the assembly.

The 100-questin test in Hessen state will not single out extremists and will not give a clear answer of loyalty as well, he added.

The Jewish Central Council in Germany blasted the sexual scenes in the immigration test.

"The majority of society has first to succeed in the this exam before it get applied to the minority that want to immigrate," said Michael Fridman, former deputy of the council.

German researcher Jurgen Micksch, founder of a multi-cultural center established after 9/11, has said that Muslims in Germany integrated effectively despite several challenges on the way.

He said members of the Muslim minority have shown an inclination to abide by the German constitution and the separation of religion and state.

In December of last year, 40 Muslim youths, aged 18-30, set up a kiosk in central Hamburg distributing illustrative materials on Islam among attentive and enthusiastic passers-by to remove stereotypes about their faith.

According to German Interior Ministry, immigration rate has been reduced during the last few years due to tough procedures.

In 2004, 127,153 immigrants obtained German citizenship compared to 186,688 in the year 2000.
