SEPANG,
Malaysia, June 1, 2005 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – The
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC)'s senior experts have agreed
that Islam Hadari will be at the center of their plans to revamp the
pan-Muslim body, said the Malaysian foreign minister.
"We
noted that the concept is based on belief, priority, mastering of
knowledge, protection of women and children, and self
empowerment," Bernama news agency quoted Syed Hamid Albar as
telling reporters Tuesday, May 31.
He
said the OIC's Commission of Eminent Persons (CEP), acknowledged the
concept of moderation enshrined in the Noble Qur'an could change the
thinking of Muslims and prepare them to face the challenges of
globalization.
Pakistan
played host on May 28-29 to the meeting of the 16-member body, under
the chairmanship of Malaysia, current rotating president of the OIC.
The
experts discussed sweeping changes to the all-Muslim body that would
include a new name and charter as well as a major restructure.
OIC
foreign ministers will meet in Yemen next month to finalize the
recommendations which will later be put before the special OIC summit
in hosted Makkah, Saudi Arabia, later this year.
Islam
Hadhari is the brainchild of Malaysian Premier Abdullah Badawi, who
maintains it is derived
from the core principles and teachings of Islam.
The
concept has the capacity to generate strength for a nation because it
gave emphasis to various matters including knowledge, economy,
culture, moral values and defense, he believes.
Badawi
maintains that among the objectives outlined in Islam Hadhari is the
creation of a just government, comprehensive and balanced economic
development, improved the quality of life, care for minorities and
women, and strong culture and moral values.
He
also believes that Islam Hadhari is entirely consistent with democracy
because it is all about living peacefully and respecting each other in
a society.
"Islam
Hadhari is an effort to bring the Ummah back to basics, back to
the fundamentals, as prescribed in the Qur’an and the Hadith that
form the foundation of Islamic civilization.”
The
OIC was established in
Rabat, Morocco, on 12 Rajab 1389H (25 September 1969) in the wake of
the Zionist attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam third holiest shrine in
Al-Quds (occupied Jerusalem), on 21 August 21, 1969.
In
March 1970, the first meeting of the OIC foreign ministers was held in
the Saudi city of Jeddah and a permanent General Secretariat was set
up to ensure a liaison among member states.
In
the meeting, the top diplomats appointed a secretary general and chose
Jeddah as the headquarters of the OIC, pending the liberation of Al-Quds,
which would be the permanent host.
Under
the OIC Charter, the OIC aims to strengthen Islamic solidarity among
member states, cooperation in the political, economic, social,
cultural and the struggle of all Muslim people to safeguard their
dignity, independence and national rights, in addition to coordination
of action to safeguard the Holy Places and support the struggle of the
Palestinian people and assist them in recovering their rights and
liberating their occupied territories.
