Moscow,
May 20, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – Amid a great growing demand among
Muslims and non-Muslims, Halal meat is set to invade big retail stores
in Russia.
In
Moscow, two Russian Islamic companies have agreed to sell Halal meat
to over 50 stores, as many people began to conform to the Islamic
cuisine, an official in Safwa company on food industry, one of the two
companies, told IslamOnline.net Thursday, May 19.
Despite
an earlier limited distribution, the company would supply halal
products such as luncheon meat and corned beef for big stores and
shopping centers in the Russian capital such as Ashan, Sofa and Cash
& Carry, the official added.
According
to Ramil Hazerat, director of “Halal rezirik” – the second halal
food company—the company’s products are selling briskly especially
in stores located next to mosques as well as in large stories.
Non-Muslims
Hazerat
noted that the products – slain according to Shari’ah laws
-- have also attracted non-Muslims for their good taste and having no
food additives.
Federal
Russia now has a sizeable number of halal food stores, amounting to
250-300, mostly located in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan
Republics in central Russia.
Halal
meat made into way into Russian stories a few years ago, but on a
limited basis, IOL correspondent says.
The
144 million-populated Russia has 23 million Muslims, including two
millions in Moscow.
Under
Islam, Muslims should
only eat meat from livestock slaughtered by a sharp
knife from their necks, and the name of Allah, the Arabic word for
God, must be mentioned.
Halal
meat has also recently proven popular in areas with Muslim populations
across the world, including the United States.
Malaysian
bi-monthly magazine, The
Halal Journal, was launched in February as the
first trade and business publication serving the global halal
marketplace.
It
provides information and updates on the global halal market and covers
all aspects of the industry, from food, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology
to banking.
