Islam Hadhari Threat To No Faith: Malaysian PM

Abdullah holds a copy of a booklet on Islam Hadhari.

PUTRAJAYA, February 10 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – Malaysian Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi sought Thursday, February 10, to assure members of his multi-racial and multi-religious country that his Islam Hadhari approach poses a threat to no one.

“Islam Hadhari is being used as an approach -- it's not a new sect, not a new religion, it's not that at all. It's not a new ideology, it's just a new approach we have created to bring Muslims towards progress that is blessed by Allah,” he said in an exclusive interview with the Malaysian news agency, BERNAMA.

“We want to show that, we Muslims, if we truly understand our religion, can enhance Islamic civilisation.

“It is not merely improving the Islamic worldview. It is not just improving the glory of our religion. It is making Muslims achieve excellence, glory and distinction.”

Asked whether his new approach would pose a threat to the rights of any ethnic or religious group in the country, Abdullah responded to the negative.

“I have spoken to non-Muslim groups. I mentioned to them one by one the principles that we talk about. I asked them whether these principles are contrary to their religion, whether it be Hinduism or Buddhism or any other. One by one I mentioned the principles and nothing is contrary to their religion.

“Good Muslims do not have to be at enmity with other people. Why do we want to be at enmity when all of us are Malaysians living in peace and harmony in this country?”

Addressing the general assembly of his ruling UMNO party on September 23, 2004, Abdullah said: “Islam Hadhari is an effort to bring the Ummah back to basics, back to the fundamentals, as prescribed in the Qur’an and the Hadith that form the foundation of Islamic civilization.”

He said it aims to achieve the following ten principles:

  • Faith and piety in Allah

  • A just and trustworthy government

  • A free and independent People

  • Mastery of knowledge

  • Balanced and comprehensive economic development

  • A good quality of life

  • Protection of the rights of minority groups and women

  • Cultural and moral integrity

  • Safeguarding the environment

  • Strong defences

In its December 27 / January 3 issue, the Newsweek praised Abdullah and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan as shining examples of leadership in the Muslim world and expected them to make the headlines in 2005.

Malaysia Belongs to all

Kooi’s family celebrate the Chinese New Year.

In his Chinese New Year message on Wednesday, February 9, Abdullah said that Malaysia belongs to citizens of all races, asserting it is everyone’s collective responsibility to take the country to greater heights of glory, distinction and excellence.

As inter-racial goodwill and co-operation is the Malaysian way of life, everyone should use the festive occasion to further strengthen racial integration, he was quoted as saying by the Star Online.

The premier described Malaysia as a lucky nation as it observed various festivals celebrated by all races.

“This is a unique feature, which would be valueless if we do not take a moment to think of all the strife and suffering going on in many other nations,” he added.

Citing a Chinese proverb “The plan for a year begins in spring (and) the plan for a day begins at dawn,” he said this was a reminder to Malaysians of the importance of proper and early planning.

Meanwhile in Kulim, company manager Shahril Cheah Lee Kooi and his family were doubly excited about celebrating Chinese New Year this year as it coincides with the beginning of the new Hijri year.

“I am very thrilled about being able to celebrate two different new years on the same day this year,” said the 46-year-old Muslim convert.
