Former British Home

draconian measures. |
CAIRO, January 25
(IslamOnline.net) – An independent British police watchdog is to
examine complaints of British Muslims on being maltreated by police
forces under the anti-terror powers, a leading British newspaper
reported Tuesday, January 25.
The Independent
Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will probe the British Muslims'
complaints and conduct matters on anti-terror arrests and stop and
search,
The Guardian said.
The British move was
hailed by the Muslim community, which has taken the brunt of the
anti-terror laws in the European country.
“There is a huge
disparity between numbers of those arrested and those actually charged
and convicted, and a disproportionate number of Muslims being stopped
and searched. We are glad the IPCC is proactive in examining important
questions about whether police are exercising their discretion
properly,” Sadiq Khan, who chairs the legal affairs committee of the
Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), told the daily.
Muslims in Britain
are already complaining that they are
maltreated by police under the Terrorism Act for no apparent reason
other than being Muslim, citing the routine stop-and-search operations.
Senior British
parliamentarians admitted last August that anti-terrorism laws are being
used “disproportionately” against Muslims.
