leaders and Turkey agreed on Friday, December 17, the terms on which
Ankara will start entry talks in October 2005, an EU government
official said.

12, 1963 - Turkey seals an association agreement with the
then-European Economic Community (EEC).
July
22, 1970 - Turkey and the EEC sign an accord foreseeing Turkey's
eventual full membership in the bloc.
1978-79

Ankara declines. Greece joins in 1981.
Sept
12, 1980 - The army topples the government and imposes military rule.
