CAIRO,
November 21 (IslamOnline.net) – British authorities are mulling a
set of tough sanctions against alcohol-related violence which hit an
all-time high, a leading British newspaper reported on Sunday,
November 21.
The
new measures will include on-the-spot penalty fines, sting operations
on businesses serving under-age drinkers and closure notices on pubs
and clubs associated with violence, said The Observer.
They
will further include giving binge drinkers caught fighting in city
centers points on their driving licenses and giving antisocial
behavior orders to offenders banning them from high-crime nightspots.
Paul
Evans, the American super-cop brought in by the Home Office to cut
Britain's crime rate, warned that the binge drinking culture was
spiraling out of control and fuelling an epidemic of violence.
“I'm
not sure it can get much worse,” said Evans, the former Boston
police chief, describing the scenes outside the city centers across
the county as chaos.
“If
you're in the business of fighting crime, then you have to be in the
business of dealing with the alcohol issue,” he said.
The
Home Office has already raised spot fines from £40 to £80 for
selling alcohol to under-18s.
Other
measures under consideration by Evans include a 'three strikes and
you're out' system in which persistent offenders would receive an
automatic anti-social behavior order after a third fixed penalty for
an alcohol-related offence.
Government
researches show that 44 per cent of violent crimes are alcohol-related
and that 70 per cent of hospital admissions at weekend are associated
with drinking, according to The Observer.
Islam
prohibits any beverage that get people intoxicated when taken,
both in small and large quantities, whether it is alcohol, drugs,
fermented raisin drink, or something else.
