CAIR Urges Action Against Islamophobic Teacher

“They must feel secure in their classrooms,” said Ali

FLORIDA, USA, August 13 (IslamOnline.net) - A leading US Muslim advocacy group called Friday, August 13, for a disciplinary action against a US teacher in Florida for descending into a rant against a Muslim student.

The Florida office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) said in a press statement that the high school teacher is nothing but Islamophobic.

According to the 15-year-old girl's family and written statements from four non-Muslim students in a world history class at Chiefland High School in Chiefland, Florida, the teacher said all Muslims are suicidal terrorists who must kill at least one American, as per CAIR.

He called the student “[First name] Saddam Hussein” and suggested that other students stay away from Muslims, according to the statements.

The school is conducting an investigation of the incident following a meeting Wednesday, August 11, with the girl's family, CAIR said.

Religious Harassment

CAIR-FL Executive Director Altaf Ali said students of all faiths should never be subjected to religious, ethnic or racial harassment.

“They must feel secure in their classrooms,” he said. “School district officials must demonstrate in concrete terms that these allegations will be investigated and that appropriate action will be taken based on the results of that investigation.”

Ali added that CAIR published a booklet, called “An Educator's Guide to
Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to prevent just such incidents.

On Thursday, August 12, CAIR launched a nationwide television and radio public service announcement (PSA) campaign, called “I am an American Muslim,” designed to help reduce anti-Muslim discrimination and stereotyping.

The 30 and 60-second PSA  features American Muslims of European, African-American, Hispanic, and Native American heritage.

Each person in the PSA states how they and their families have served America and ends by saying, “I am an American Muslim.”

Nearly 57 percent of American Muslims polled by CAIR complained of having experienced bias or discrimination  since the September 11 attacks and 87 percent know of a fellow Muslim who experienced discrimination.

Asked to list the most important domestic issues they will use to determine a presidential choice, almost 40 percent of the polled cited civil rights, followed by the economy at 25 percent.
