CAIRO,
June 13 (IslamOnline.net) – Washington and its allies are running a
wanton global network of detention camps allowing the U.S. to fly
so-called terror suspects to other countries where they are tortured
for information, reported a British newspaper on Sunday, June 13.
The
Observer said the detentions network stretches from the notorious
detentions in Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan and Iraq to naval vessels in
the Indian Ocean.
The
paper added that Washington is relaying on its allies in the Arab
world and Asia to help interrogate and extract information from
suspects.
According
to the Observer, the U.S. is transferring scores of suspects to
detention camps in Jordan, Morocco, Syria, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, Saudi
Arabia, Azerbaijan and Thailand.
Milton
Bearden, who ended a 30-year career with the CIA in 1994, criticized
the tactic and cast doubt on its effectiveness.
"You
just get all kinds of confessions that turn out to be completely
untrue," he was quoted as saying by the paper.
"And
rendition to someone who will torture a suspect is as bad as doing
it," he said in reference to the measure where suspects are
handed directly into the custody of another state without due process.
Several
cases of "renditions" involve suspects who were already
found innocent by courts in their countries, said the Observer.
It
cited the story of Wahab Al-Rami, a British businessman, who was were
arrested by U.S. and local officers in Gambia in November 2002 upon
arrival there after a tip-off from British security agencies.
The
arrest came days after a British court cleared him of terror charges
leveled against him.
Al-Rami
was flown to Guantanamo where he is being held to date, said the
daily.
