80%
of the Saudi oil production is piped to Ras Tanura for exporting
|
CAIRO,
June 3 (IslamOnline.net) – An Egyptian-born American oil expert
warned Thursday, June 3, that an attack on Saudi Arabia's main oil
export terminal at Ras Tanura would destabilize the West and send oil
prices as high as 100 dollars per barrel, reported a leading British
newspaper.
"I
cannot think of any more logical target for terrorists. It [Ras
Tanura] is the nerve centre for the Saudi oil trade but also for
global exports," Fadel Gheit told the Guardian.
As
much as 80% of the some 9 million barrels per day pumped by Riyadh is
believed to end up being piped to Ras Tanura before being uploaded on
supertankers bound for the west.
"If
you can blow up the Pentagon in broad daylight, then it cannot be
impossible to fly a plane into Ras Tanura - and then you are talking
$100 [per barrel] oil," Gheit said.
He
claimed that a regime change in Saudi Arabia to a more "hostile
Islamic government" is as inevitable as it was in Iran a quarter
of a century ago.
"It's
only a matter of time."
Fears
of upheaval in Saudi Arabia helped set world crude oil prices to a
21-year high of $42.45 per barrel.
