An Iraqi female detainee behind bars in Abu Ghraib

CAIRO,
May 12 (IslamOnline.net) – U.S. soldiers in Iraq have raped, sexually
humiliated and abused several Iraqi female detainees in the notorious
Abu Gharib prison, an Iraqi female professor revealed Wednesday, May 12.
In
an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Professor Huda Shaker,
a political scientist at Baghdad University, said an Iraqi young girl was raped by a
U.S. military policeman and became pregnant.
"The
girl was called Noor. When I went to her house in Baghdad
earlier this year she had
disappeared. The neighbors said that she and her family had moved
away," she asserted.
Prof
Shaker, an Amnesty International researcher, recalled that a
"female colleague" was arrested and taken to Abu Gharib.
"When
I asked her after she was released what happened at Abu Ghraib she
started crying," said noted.
"Ladies
here are afraid and shy of talking about such subjects. They say
everything is OK. Even in a very advanced society in the west it is very
difficult to talk about rape. But I think it happened."
Few
women released from U.S.
detention have come forward
to talk about their experiences in a Muslim society where rape is
sometimes equated with shame, remarked The Guardian.
In
its May 10-17 issue, the Newsweek said that yet-unreleased Abu Gharib
abuse photos "include an
American soldier having sex with a
female Iraqi detainee and American soldiers watching Iraqis have sex
with juveniles."
