Sharia Courts For Canadian Muslims

A file photo of Canadian Muslims

ONTARIO, Canada, April 29 (IslamOnline.net) -  Canada's 600,000 Muslims will have the chance of settling most of their civil legal disputes, including divorce, according to the Islamic Sharia, reported the Independent on Thursday, April 29.

Ontario will be the first to apply the new model which will be administered by the Islamic Institute of Justice, a body of  Islamic scholars created at the end of last year.

The authorities stressed that cases will only go before Muslim arbitrators with the voluntary assent of all parties involved.

They also made it clear the new courts would still have to respect all provisions of the country's Charter of Rights and Freedoms that guarantees human and equal rights.
