Chalabi was once expected to assume a powerful role in post-Saddam Iraq
WASHINGTON,
April 24 (IslamOnline.net) – The U.N. and U.S. have agreed to
sideline most of the players favored by Washington in Iraq since the
invasion-turned-occupation when forming the new government, an
American daily confirmed Saturday, April 24.
Topping
the list is Ahmed Chalabi, a long-time favorite of the Pentagon and
Vice President Dick Cheney, the Washington Post quoted U.S. officials
as acknowledging.
Chalabi’s
the Iraqi National Congress might also lose the 340,000 dollars paid
monthly by Washington, said the daily, recalling that the party has
received millions of dollars in U.S. aid over the past decade as the
primary vehicle for supporting the Iraqi opposition.
However,
Chalabi will not be the only one shelved after U.N. envoy Lakhdar
Brahimi confirmed that most of the 25-member U.S.-sanctioned Interim
Governing Council have little public support.
