CAIRO,
April 23 (IslamOnline.net) - The Egyptian government should exploit
the important changes in the outlook of the Islamic activism in the
country and involve Islamists in politics, a recent study by a
Brussels-based independent group recommended.
"Unless
the Egyptian government changes its approach, opens up the political
field and undertakes serious political reform, the frustration which
many Egyptians feel could lead to a recrudescence of violent activism
at some stage," cautioned the International Crisis Group (ICG) in
its report released on Thursday, April 20.
Abu
Al-Elaa Madi, an activist, regretted that Islamists are banned from
forming party despite growing popularity.
He
is one of several political activists, including Christians, who
applied in 1998 for a government registration of their
Islamic-oriented Central Party but the application was turned down.
Madi
told Reuters he hoped the government would pay heed to the ICG recommendation, adding
he would re-submit the request for registration.
