Jewish Extremists Held Over Targeting Israeli Arabs

Golan, 22, confessed to targeting Israeli Arab Knesset members, including Makhoul

By Soliman Basharat, IOL Staff

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, March 6 (IslamOnline.net) - Israeli police has uncovered a Jewish extremist group accused of launching several attacks against Israeli Arabs , including Knesset members, over the past years.

Israeli police arrested on Friday, March 5, soldier Yevgeny Grossman on charges of attacks against Israeli Arabs in Haifa as well as links to Eliran Golan, reported of the Israeli Yedioth Ahronot newspaper Saturday, March 6.

Golan, who was naped by Israeli police on Wednesday, March 3, confessed he plotted to use explosives against Arab targets, mostly in Haifa.

He admitted planting an explosive charge inside in the Halisa neighborhood, Haifa, in August 2001, which left 62-year-old Jamila Agbariyah seriously wounded.

Arab MKs

The Israeli paper added that Golan, 22, confessed to planting an explosive charge under the car of Knesset member Issam Makhoul while it was parked near his house three months ago.

The bomb went off when Makhoul's wife started the car, but she was unhurt.

He also admitted plotting similar attacks against other Israeli Arab lawmakers, including MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash), Ahmed Tibi (Hadash), and Azmi Bishara (Balad-National Democratic Alliance).

Golan also targeted Jews who maintain good relations with the Israeli Arab community.

Before his arrest, Golan planted a bomb near a Jewish house and sent a threatening letter to a girl living there to stop going out with Israeli Arabs, said Yedioth Ahronot.

Israeli police have also arrested Golan’s father, a civilian employed by the Israel army, on suspicion of involvement.

"Police still investigate the role played by the father in the organization. Yet, the father denies any accusation saying: I know nothing. I like all people and I don’t hate Arabs," police sources told Israeli Haaretz.

Police suspect that Meir supplied his son with bombs and explosives as well as a military binocular, through which he watched the targets he deemed suitable for his operations.

On Wednesday, police presented the media with two suitcases filled with explosives and weapons, including 16 large bombs ready for use, as well as 18 smaller bombs, reportedly prepared by Golan.

An additional suitcase contained dozens of bullets, matchboxes, and accessories for preparing improvised bombs.

Golan's brother was also detained by police for questioning, after he pointed a plastic gun at Army Radio and Israel Radio reporters who sought the family's reaction to the charges.

Extremists

Jewish extremists have carried out numerous attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank, where they targeted schools and Islamic shrines, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque.

One of those groups detonated several explosive charges inside a Palestinian school in the West Bank town of Jenin , to the north of the West Bank, leaving 29 wounded.

Such groups are equipped with start-of-the-art weapons, according to a recent report published by Israeli Ma'ariv newspaper.

The so-called Temple Mount Faithful, which calls for demolishing Al-Aqsa compound, had submitted a petition  to the Israeli Supreme Court to rule against Palestinian restoration works in Islam’s third holiest site.

This came few days after a part of the road leading to one of Al-Aqsa Mosque’s main gates collapsed  on February 15, due to ongoing Israeli excavations under the holy site.
