Dutch Documentary Exposes Bias Towards Israel

Israeli aggressions on Palestinians hardly slammed

By Khaled Shawkat, IOL Correspondent

The HAGUE, October 27 (IslamOnline.net) - The clear and long-established forms of bias towards Israel in the Netherlands' politics and media was exposed in a rare documentary aired by the Dutch TV.

Admitting close links between the two countries, a number of prominent politicians, media specialists and activists gave testimonies to the role played by the Jewish community to serve Israel's interests in the European country.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry and its missions across the world always receive orders at times of wars and crises that they should stand by Israel militarily and financially, said former Netherlands Foreign Ministers Hans Van Mierlo and Hans Van den Broek.

The documentary, entitled "Silence Over Israel” and broadcast on Channel 3, cited the example of the 1973 war, in which the then Dutch Defense Minister said he had given orders to the Netherlands army to stand by for helping Israel.

"We had been worried Israeli forces would not be able to counter a third attack, especially after the difficulties they had endured on the northern and southern fronts with Egypt and Syria," said the former Minister.

The policy of the Netherlands has been long featured by a full bias towards Israel, and boost its financial and political position at war times against Arab countries as well as in international conventions and forums including in the United Nations.

Enhancing The Support

Israeli Ambassador in Amsterdam Eitan Margalit appreciated The Netherlands' backing, adding his mission works for furthering such unique cooperation.

"My men are working hard to keep contacts with politicians and journalists regarding all of the Israeli issues, including lodging protests against those writing or stating anti-Israel rhetoric," said Margalit.

The documentary featured a director of a Zionist website as saying his team is staging campaigns or lodging complaints against any stories published in the press against Israel's practices or in support of Palestinians.

"The campaign includes sending thousands of protest letters signed in different names to the targeted paper, calling for publishing part of any of these letters or another article of the opposite view," he said.

The Dutch government usually offers condolences to Israel for "any deaths in Palestinian attacks, something which does not stand a repeat with Palestinian victims who fall in Israeli raids," said Bert Kondrs, a leftist Labor Party MP.

The ready-made accusation is anti-Semitism.

"It is really strange for the Zionist lobby to turn any criticisms of Israel into anti-Semitic remarks, a bitter accusation that could put the critics on trial," said Hayo Myre, a Jewish activist and leader of "For the Sake of Other Jewish Voice".

Faerah Kremy, a Muslim Green Party MP known for support to the Palestinians' right to self-determination and establishment of a Palestinian state, said she had received many letters slamming her as anti-Semitic.

"Any talks about Israel should - necessarily- begin with mentioning the Jews' history of sufferings under the Nazis, a sign seen as prohibiting any similar talk about the tough conditions Palestinians are subjected to at the hands of Israeli occupation forces," said Kremy.

'Genuine Friends'

The documentary ended the scenes with the statements of hardline Israeli Tourism Minister Beni Elon in which he hailed the unique cooperation offered by The Netherlands.

"When I will come back to my country, I will tell the cabinet members 'Do not worry, we have genuine friends there'," Elon had said in a conference recently held under the title "Christians for the sake of Israel".

Ironically with its critical tone, the documentary began with Elon's naming of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as Judea Samaria, an Israeli effort to seize control of the two Palestinian areas, and his reiterated rejection to the establishment of a Palestinian state, a condition mainly stipulated in the U.S.-sponsored roadmap peace plan.

The Zionist remarks at the beginning and end in the program - the first on the screen of Holland, carried the same message it tries to focus a light on- the double-standard level of the Zionist language and the facts long concealed in the closet away from viewers here.
