RAMALLAH,
West Bank, September 27 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) -
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s Fatah Central Committee okayed
Saturday, September 27, the cabinet line-up presented by
Premier-designate Ahmed Qorei, including Nasser Yusuf as new security
chief and Interior Minister, party officials said.
Fatah
officials approved the list of 24 names, a senior party official told
Agence France-Presse (AFP) on condition of anonymity, saying it included
at least 10 people who served in previous governments before the
appointment of outgoing Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas in April.
The
key name on the list was that of general Yusuf, who will take over the
Interior Ministry.
"Nasser
Yusuf will be the Interior Minister," central committee member
Abbas Zaki told journalists after the meeting.
"We
discussed the names of the new cabinet and there is agreement within the
Fatah Central Committee," senior Palestinian official Hani
al-Hassan said.
Half
of the 24 positions would be filled with new faces, he said, adding
there was "good representation" for factions outside Fatah.
But
another senior party official said the committee had approved all but
four names on the list.
He
did not give further details but said a final decision about the four
would be made when Qorei presents the list to the Palestine Liberation
Organization (PLO) executive committee later in the day.
The
list will be taken to the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) early
next week.
Although
the list has not yet been finalized, several ministers were slated to
hold on to their previous positions.
They
include Saeb Erakat, who was recently appointed as negotiations
minister, finance minister Salam Fayad and foreign minister Nabil
Shaath, the source said.
Former
cabinet affairs minister Yasser Abed Rabbo will take over the post of
Information Minister.
Shortly
before his meeting with the Fatah heads, Qorei met Arafat at his
battered compound and the two held a final consultation before
presenting the list, a senior Palestinian source said.
If
the PLC accepts the list, the new government will be presented the same
day.
Qorei,
66, was picked by Arafat to form a new government following the
resignation of Abbas on September 6 after only four months on the job.
Earlier
this week, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell told Israeli Foreign
Minister Silvan Shalom that Qorei has more political power than his
predecessors, and expressed hope that progress would be possible with
him, reported the Israeli Ha'aretz daily Saturday.
He
told Shalom that Israel should avoid decisions "that create
situations from which it is difficult to return," an echo of
National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice's statement to Shalom that
Israel should ignore Arafat and not take irreversible steps" toward
him.
Powell
told Shalom, "how do you know that if Arafat were gone, he will be
replaced by moderate leaders. Maybe they would be more extreme?" Ha'aretz
added.
