Israel Kills Palestinian, Wounds 23 In Gaza

Palestinian youths gather around the destroyed car

By Mostafa al-Sawaf, Yasser Al-Banna, IOL Correspondents

JABALIYA, Gaza Strip, August 26 (IslamOnline.net) - An hour after Palestinian Premier Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Gaza for talks with resistance factions on a new truce, a U.S.-made Israeli Apaches fired a volley of rockets at a densely-populated neighborhood, to the north of Gaza, killing a 70-year-old Palestinian and wounding 23 others, including four children.

As part of its unabated assassination campaign against Palestinian resistance activists, two Israeli helicopter gunships fired a volley of rockets at a Palestinian Renaut driving through the Abad el-Rahman neighborhood, reported IslamOnline.net correspondent.

The missiles completely destroyed the vehicle, killed Hassan el- Hamalawy, 70, who happened to be standing by and wounded 23 others, including three children in life-threatening conditions.

Hamas sources told IOL the new Israeli assassination attempt targeted members of Ezz el-Dine el-Qassam Brigades, who were able to escape the car seconds before the bombardment.

Mohammad el-Bardaweil, a 19-year-old eyewitness, told IOL correspondent that two Israeli rockets were fired at two vehicles, a Renaut and an Opel, apparently targeting three resistance activists.

As the occupants of the cars run for their life, the Israeli helicopter gunships fired a third rocket wounding several by-passers in the crowded streets.

Defying world condemnation of its assassination policy, Israel adamantly vowed to press the so-called "targeted killings" of Palestinian resistance activists.

Israeli army chief Lt. Gen. Moshe Yaalon said Sunday, August 24, that "every member of Hamas is a potential target for liquidation."

Few hours before his statements, Israeli helicopter gun ships fired five missiles into a car in western Gaza killing four Palestinian resistance activists.

Ismail Abu Shanab, a senior Hamas political leader and two of his associates were assassinated by Israel Thursday, August 21, in the first of the series of assassinations that triggered retaliation vows from Palestinian resistance groups.

The killing of Abu Shanab topped incessant Israeli violations of the truce, with a Palestinian human rights organization registering 854 Israeli violations of the truce in the last month alone. (click to see a breakdown for Israeli violations).

Reacting to the assassination, the Palestinian resistance groups Islamic Jihad and Hamas issued a joint statement formally ended the unilateral truce they declared on June 29.
