BAGHDAD,
Aug 2 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – The U.S. forces said
one soldier was killed and three others injured in a rocket-propelled
grenade (RPG) north of Baghdad, while Al-Jazeera reported that several
American soldiers were killed in another RPG attack on two U.S.
armored vehicles in Baqubah.
"One
4th Division Infantry soldier was killed and three injured at
approximately 10:30 pm (1830 GMT) on August 1 when their convoy came
under an RPG attack south of Shumayat," a town between Balad and
Tikrit around 100 kilometers north of Baghdad, Agence France-Presse
(AFP) quoted a U.S. military spokesman as saying.
Quoting
eyewitnesses, the Qatar-based channel said two U.S. armored vehicles
were completely burnt down by an RPG attack in the northern Baghdad
town of Baqubah.
The
witnesses asserted that the attack left U.S. soldiers killed and
injured.
They
said that the U.S. troops responded with shelling houses in the town,
leaving two Iraqi civilians killed.
Also
on Friday, a U.S. soldier with the First Armored Division died in
Baghdad from a gunshot wound received the day before, apparently by
accident, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.
"The
soldier was standing outside when a bullet, fired from a celebrating
Iraqi, struck him," the statement said.
"The
soldier was evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital and
subsequently died."
In
a separate attack on Friday, an Iraqi woman was killed by U.S.
soldiers who had come under fire in the Mansur district of Baghdad.
"An
Iraqi woman was killed when U.S. soldiers fired in self-defense during
an attack in Mansur," a U.S. army spokesman claimed.
An
unknown attacker threw an explosive device at a convoy of six U.S.
military vehicles from a bridge at 6:45 pm (1445 GMT).
"The
woman was at the location when the explosion occured. Neighborhood
residents brought the victim to the local hospital where she was
declared dead," the spokesman said.
Since
U.S. President George W. Bush declared
an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, the U.S. troops say 52
U.S. soldiers have been killed in "guerrilla attacks", while
at least 56 have died in non-combat incidents.
