JAKARTA,
April 27 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - A bomb ripped through
a restaurant area at Indonesia's main international airport early
Sunday, April 27, injuring 11 people in what officials called a
terrorist attack.
The
blast near a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant -- the second explosion
in three days in the country -- may be linked to current or pending
trials of “terror” suspects, said top security minister Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono, Agence France-Presse (AFP) said.
"We
cannot afford to relax our alertness ... do not only rely on the
police, there should be a national movement to continue to prevent
these acts of terrorism," he said.
Police
cordoned off the scene of the blast at the domestic terminal of
Sukarno-Hatta airport outside Jakarta. The airport remained open.
The
pipe bomb, detonated by a motorcycle battery, exploded around 6:30 am
(2330 GMT Saturday, April 27). National police chief Dai Bachtiar said
six people were hurt but hospital officials said 11 were injured,
including a woman who lost a leg.
"This
is (intended) to create fear but we are still investigating which
group is responsible," Bachtiar said.
He
said security would be tightened nationwide in public places
"because if we leave such public places without security such an
incident will happen again."
Yudhoyono
said there may be "some correlation with the ongoing trial of a
number of figures suspected of involvement in terrorism."
Abu
Bakar Bashir, the alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group,
went on trial Wednesday, April 23, for treason in connection with a
series of deadly blasts. On the same day police announced the arrest
of 18 JI suspects and said they had seized weapons and explosives.
The
blast carpeted the restaurant area with broken glass. A restaurant
serving Korean food appeared to suffer the worst damage.
"When
the bomb blew up, there was a clear flame," said Supriyadi, a
hawker selling perfume in the area. He was unhurt.
Transport
Minister Agum Gumelar said security at all airports would be
tightened.
National
detective chief Erwin Mappaseng said there were some similarities with
a bomb that exploded near the United Nations mission in central
Jakarta early Thursday, April 24, causing no injuries and little
damage.
"The
aims of the perpetrators are clearly to terrorize people, to scare
them," Mappaseng said.
Jihan,
32, who was among the injured, said he believed the blast came from a
bag placed under a seat.
Jemaah
Islamiyah is accused of staging the October
12 Bali bombings which killed 202 people and dozens of other
blasts.
Leading
Bali suspects are due to stand trial next month.
Bachtiar
warned Friday that “terrorists” would not give up despite the
arrest of suspected JI members.
"Their
documents show that they are not quitting. They will continue to
engage in terrorist activity," he said.
Last
December 5 bombers killed three people and injured 11 in an attack on
a McDonald's restaurant in Makassar city. Police have said people
arrested for that blast are believed to be linked to the Bali bombers.
Yudhoyono
said Indonesia faces twin threats -- from terrorism and from
separatist movements in Aceh, in Papua, and to a lesser extent in the
Maluku islands.
He
said there were indications of correlations between the situation in
Aceh and several recent acts of terrorism.
Police
have said a key suspect in a recent bombing at Medan in North Sumatra
was an Aceh rebel leader.
Peace
talks with Aceh separatist rebel leaders were cancelled this weekend.
