PARIS,
December 17 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A French Court issued
a ruling Tuesday, December 17, ordering the return of a hijab-wearing
Muslim woman to her work in a French firm.
The
Muslim woman was fired because of wearing the Islamic hair cover.
The
court also ordered the company to pay Dalila Tahiri back her monthly
salary since the date she was fired, and fined the firm one thousand
euros for unjustified dismissal of the employee.
A
veteran lawyer and expert in immigration cases described the court
verdict as a precedent, asserting that in case of any similar firing
of hijab-wearing women, the lawyers would base their defense on this
case.
Dalila's
lawyer stressed that the September 11 attacks on the United States had
influenced the people's ability to tolerate Islamic traditions.
This
raises questions on whether the company, which had before allowed
Muslim women to wear hijab or the Islamic headscarf, had changed
hearts after the 9-11 attacks.
Dalila,
a 30-year-old woman of Algerian origin, told the French TV after the
court hearing that men and women were equals and that women should be
allowed to work and share in society development.
The
French company had fired Dalila, who had been wearing her hijab for
over eight years, after she refused to take it off.
Defending
her hijab before court, Dalila said Islam forbids her from taking it
off, refuting claims that hijab-wearing undermines women’s status in
society.
