U.N. resolution shows international unity on Iraq: Solana
|
BRUSSELS,
November 8 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - EU foreign policy chief
Javier Solana welcomed Friday, November 8, the United Nations
resolution on Iraq, saying it reflected international
"unity" and determination to bring Baghdad into line.
"I
welcome the unanimous adoption today of the new United Nations
Security Council resolution on Iraq," Agence France-Presse (AFP)
quoted Solana as saying.
"The
views of the European Union are fully reflected in this text,
particularly the key objective of the EU, namely vigorously to address
the disarmament of Iraq and to do so within the framework of the U.N.
Security Council," he said.
"Today's
message to Baghdad is very clear: the U.N. Security Council resolution
expresses the unity and determination of the entire international
community to assume its collective responsibility."
Meanwhile
in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer welcomed the U.N.
Security Council's unanimous vote on disarming Iraq, calling it a
clear message to Baghdad to abandon its resistance to weapons
inspections.
"(Iraqi
leader) Saddam Hussein must recognize what severe consequences
ignoring this resolution will have," Fischer said.
He
said U.N. arms inspectors should return to Iraq as soon as possible
and only with their unconditional readmission, could Baghdad have a
chance at securing peace and stability in the region.
Fischer
said Germany would continue to support the efforts of chief U.N.
weapons inspector Hans Blix and considered the fresh pressure on Iraq
to accept inspections to be backed by the U.N. Charter and
international law.
Berlin
has been one of the sharpest critics of U.S. threats to strike Baghdad
and has ruled out any role of the German army in military action
against Iraq, even if sanctioned with a new U.N. resolution.
However,
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's center-left government has
continuously called for the resumption of arms inspections in the
country.
In
Montreal, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien hailed the new U.N.
Security Council resolution on Iraq as a key step towards confronting
the threat from what he described as Iraq's weapons program.

Chretien
also praised the Security Council's members for unanimously passing
the resolution.
"This
is a key and constructive step by the international community and the
United Nations to address the threat of weapons of mass destruction in
Iraq," the prime minister said in a statement.
"Canada
has long advocated the adoption of a resolution that spells out
clearly what is expected of Iraq, both in terms of its international
obligations and the consequences of continued Iraqi
non-compliance," he added.
"We
are very pleased to see the Security Council speaking with one
voice," Chretien declared.
"We
call upon Iraq to fulfill its responsibilities without conditions or
delay.
"Failing
that, the Security council will reconvene immediately to consider the
situation and the need to secure international peace and
security."
The
U.N. Security Council adopted resolution 1441 earlier Friday setting
out the conditions for sending weapons inspectors to Iraq and warning
of serious consequences if their work was obstructed.
