Homesick Abu-Keshek Wins Palestine's First Ever Asiad Medal

Abu-Keshek displays photos of his two-month-old son whom he hasn't yet seen because of Israeli occupation

BUSAN, South Korea, October 11 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Nablus boxer Munir Abu-keshek is homesick. His wife had a baby boy in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank town in August, but he hasn't seen him yet.

However, the 27-year-old light heavyweight said Friday, October 11, it had been worth the wait after winning Palestine its first ever Asian Games medal, a bronze.

"Winning this medal will bring hope to my people," Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted the Palestinian champ as saying.

"I am very dedicated and I have been here to do my best for my son and for the Palestinian people. I think of my son and my people every day."

Abukeshek trained in Jericho in the lead-up to the Games to avoid the possibility of being confined to the curfew-hit northern West bank city of Nablus.

The Israeli occupation army reoccupied most of the Palestinian towns, imposing curfews, killing, terrorizing, and abducting civilians.

"I was scared that if I went back to Nablus to see my son I couldn't get out again," he told AFP.

Abu-Keshek was defeated Friday 17-2 in the semi-final by South Korea's Choi Ki-Soo.

He managed to land two punches to Choi's 17 and was given two eight-second counts, but as it was his first fight in two years, he wasn't disappointed.

Abu-keshek had drawn an opening-round bye which sent him straight to the semi-final.

"I was hoping for a silver, but my training hasn't been good," he said, explaining that he trained alone in his home.

"We live in a terrible situation. For boxers there aren't any clubs. Everything has been closed. There is no-one to practice with.

"I don't know what the future holds, but I hope I can continue and train in another country and be more prepared for the next Asian Games."

The Israeli occupation army on Monday, October 7, partially lifted the curfew it has imposed for months on Nablus which has been the scene of frequent Israeli army raids.

Palestine had one other boxer in the Asian Games, middleweight Ismael Faiala who lives in a refugee camp near Ramallah. He lost to India's Jitender Kumar on points Saturday, October 5.
