WASHINGTON,
September 28 (IslamOnline) - The Council on American-Islamic
Relations (CAIR), a national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group, will hold
a news conference Monday, September 30, in the U.S. capital to announce the
publication of a first-of-its-kind guide to the North American Muslim community.
According
to CAIR’s website, The 350-page book, called "The North American Muslim
Resource Guide: Muslim Community Life in the United States and Canada [Rout
ledge]," is the first comprehensive analysis of the structural make-up of
Muslim communities in both countries. It provides an in-depth look at the
history of Islam on the American continent, an introduction to Islamic
institutions and an assessment of North American Muslims' perception of
themselves.
Along
with an outline of the response of Muslim media outlets, charities and community
support structures to the attacks of 9/11/2001, the book also offers an analysis
of population statistics, immigration, participation in the political process,
and a 127-page directory listing contact information for Muslim organizations in
North America.
"The
North American Muslim Resource Guide is an indispensable road-map for any reader
who hopes to move past the boundary of ethnic and religious stereotypes to view
the human face behind one of the fastest-growing and most vital populations in
North America," said Research Director Dr. Mohamed Nimer, the book's
author.
The
conference will be held at 10 a.m., at CAIR's Capitol Hill Office, 453 New
Jersey Avenue, S.E., Washington, D.C. (Near South Capitol Metro stop.)
And
in a separate related issue, Fox
News Channel officials told CAIR they were receiving "thousands" of
complaints about anti-Muslim bias in that network's news and commentary. The
Islamic group requested a meeting to discuss ways in which Fox's coverage of
issues related to Islam and Muslims can be improved, according to CAIR sources.
Last
week, CAIR alerted the Muslim community to what the group said was the latest
incident in a pattern of Islam phobic coverage by Fox. CAIR's alert cited the
network's inflammatory reporting on the recent "terror scare" in
Florida, the tendency to ambush and abuse those Muslims who appear on its
programs, in addition to other abuses to Islam and Muslims.
As
an example of the bias promoted by the network, CAIR also cited an e-mail
message to Fox News Channel CEO Roger Ailes (that was copied to CAIR). That
e-mail, sent from the account of a Pennsylvania businessman, called Muslims
“murderous lowlife subhuman filth," and hailed FOX’s coverage.
"This
is just the kind of hate that is inspired and incited by Fox's biased coverage
of Islam, Muslims and the Middle East. Fox is neither fair nor balanced when it
comes to these issues," said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper also thanked all those who took the time to contact Fox to express their
concerns.
