Israeli Tanks Move into Gaza City, Demolish More Homes

Seconds earlier, it was a home. Then Israelis turned it into a hole and made another family homeless

GAZA CITY, September 12 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Israeli tanks rolled into the eastern side of Gaza City early Thursday, September 12, causing clashes to erupt between Israeli occupation troops and Palestinian gunmen. Israeli forces also demolished the home of a Palestinian activist in the neighborhood of Ishi Jayia on the outskirts of Gaza City overnight Wednesday, September 11.

Palestinian security sources and witnesses told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the shooting occurred as the tanks moved more than 600 meters (yards) into the Ishi Jayia and al-Muntara districts, which lie in the city’s eastern half.

There were no reports of injuries in the clashes.

At Ishi Jayia, the army blew up the home of a Hamas activist, witnesses said. Six other houses were damaged in the explosion although there were no reports of injuries.

Four tanks and an Israeli bulldozer also staged a brief incursion into the al-Mughazi refugee camp, south of the city, where they demolished two houses, Palestinian security sources said.

After destroying the houses, the occupation troops pulled out.

An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed that troops were operating both in the east of Gaza City and in the al-Mughazi refugee camp, but said she could not release further details until the operation ended.

Palestinian security officials said that tanks and bulldozers also moved around 500 meters (yards) into Rafah town on the southern border with Egypt, where they destroyed three houses. There were no exchanges of fire the, they said.

Palestinians said Thursday that one man was injured after tanks entered the Gaza Strip overnight Wednesday firing at several targets. The tanks left the Gaza Strip after they completed their operation, according to Israeli daily Ha'aretz.

Meanwhile, two mortars were fired at a settlement in the Gaza Strip overnight Wednesday without causing any injuries, Ha'aretz said.

On Thursday, a bomb detonated next to an Israeli force near the West bank town of Bir Zeit without causing any injuries, the paper said, adding that 114 Palestinians, were caught by border policemen and were to be expelled back to the Palestinian territories.
