CAIRO,
August 28 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Danish Foreign Minister
Per Stig Moeller will visit Egypt Monday, September 2, to present a
European-backed plan for peace in the Middle East, Egypt's official
news agency MENA reported Wednesday, August 28.
Moeller,
whose country took over the European Union (EU) rotating presidency on
July 1, will discuss with his counterpart Ahmed Maher "the
situation in the Middle East in light of Israel's aggressions against
the Palestinian people," said MENA.
Moeller
announced earlier Wednesday from Copenhagen that the Danish-prepared
three-stage peace plan would be presented to EU foreign ministers at
an informal meeting in the Danish city of Helsingoer on Friday and
Saturday, August 30, 31.
The
plan, based on U.S. President George W. Bush's policy for the troubled
region, envisages the creation of an independent Palestinian state in
2005.
Denmark's
Berlingske Tidende newspaper gave its own account of the plan.
The
first phase of the plan calls for a security agreement to be concluded
between Israel and the Palestinians ahead of Palestinian elections in
January, and aimed at ending the violence that has engulfed the region
for almost two years, the paper said.
The
second phase calls for Palestinian reforms, including the drafting of
a constitution and setting up an independent judiciary.
