Pakistan Denies Indian Allegations about Kashmir Attack

Hindu pilgrims guarded by Indian troops

ISLSMABAD, Aug 6 (IslamOnline) - Pakistan Tuesday, August 6, 2002, rejected Indian allegations of its involvement in a terrorist attack in Indian held Kashmir which resulted in the death of nine pilgrims early Tuesday.

"We condemn the terrorist attack on Hindu pilgrims" the Foreign Office said in a statement issued here Tuesday afternoon following allegations from Indian junior minister I D Swami that Pakistan was behind the killing of nine pilgrims.

"The government rejects with contempt", the statement said of the remarks made by the Indian Junior Home Minister who earlier said in Delhi that Pakistan was behind this attack as it wanted to influence the state election in Kashmir, due in September this year.

A Muslim separatists group Al-Mansourian was blamed for the early morning ambush in the Indian Kashmir. Al Mansouri is the new title for Lashkare e Taiab which re-named itself after being banned by the United States for its alleged involvement in terrorist activities in Kashmir. Lashkar had its offices in Pakistan till late last year when it was banned by the military regime. It is one of two groups India says was behind an attack on its parliament last December. ends...

The Hindu pilgrims were attacked Tuesday morning, while they were sleeping at a camp on their way to a shrine in the foothills of the Himalayas.
