Moussaoui Attempts to Plead Guilty

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia, July 19 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Frenchman Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person charged in connection with the September 11 attacks, tried to plead guilty Thursday, July 18, in a Virginia courtroom, but the judge gave him another week to make a final decision.

"I want to plead guilty. I know who done it [the September 11 attacks] which group, who participated. It would help me to save my life. I plead bayat [allegiance] to Osama bin Laden. I am member of Al-Qaeda," Moussaoui, 34, who has refused legal representation, said in court.

"You are admitting what the government is claiming you did," Judge Leonie Brinkema said, giving him a week to reflect on a final decision.

"You have changed your mind so many times in the past," the judge added. "I am entering once again a not guilty plea on your behalf," Brikema said.

"I don't need," Moussaoui said in response. "I've been thinking about it for months."

"You are denying me any sense of justice."

Moments after Brinkema entered an innocent plea on Moussaoui’s behalf to a third indictment issued Tuesday, July 16, Moussaoui tried to plead guilty.

Insisting that Moussaoui think about his decision for a week, Brinkema set July 25 as the date for the next hearing in the case.

However, even though he attempted to plead guilty, Moussaoui said he wanted to fight the government's attempt to have him executed.

Following a new Supreme Court ruling on the death penalty, U.S. prosecutors filed and obtained a third indictment against Moussaoui, which added allegations of "aggravating circumstances" that would enable the government to seek the death penalty.
