CAIRO,
July 18 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - The head of Egyptian
television news department, Mohammed Al-Wakil,
now faces trial as he is accused of accepting a bribe to put a doctor
on his chat show, chief prosecutor Mahed Abdel Wahed said Wednesday,
July 17.
Besides
Wakil,
three other men were also remanded to the state security court,
including Dr. Fakher Fuad Guendi, producer Ahmed Al-Hassissi and
television staffer Hani Abdel Latif, Wahed told a press conference.
Guendi
allegedly gave 10,000 Egyptian pounds (2,000 dollars) to Hassissi and
Latif and asked them to pass it on to Wakil
to invite Guendi to appear on the show “Hello Egypt”, allowing him
to publicize his clinic, Agence France-Presse (AFP) said.
Wakil was arrested on July 7 in his office by officials of the
body in charge of monitoring state employees, as Hassissi was handing
him the money.
Hassissi,
who is also a professor at the Suez Canal University and Abdel Latif
were detained along with Wakil.
Guendi,
accused of corrupting a state employee, was freed after a police
interrogation.
Egypt’s
State Security prosecutor has ordered the two men be detained for 15
days pending the investigation, the report said.
Minister
of Information Safwat Al-Sherif announced earlier in the day that al-Wakil
had been suspended pending an investigation into allegations about his
conduct, Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
The
date of the trial has not yet been fixed.
Recently
there have been several corruption cases related to Egyptian
television officials, including financial and sexual bribes.
