Demonstrations In Gaza In Solidarity With Detained Palestinians

Report By Yasser Al Banna, IOL Gaza Correspondent

GAZA STRIP, July 6 (IslamOnline) – The Supreme Committee for the Following-up of National and Islamic forces in Gaza organized Saturday a solidarity demonstration with the Palestinian prisoners of war detained in the occupation forces prisons.

The demonstration started in front of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza and headed towards the base of the United Nations in Gaza where a memo was handed to the UN representative asking the international body to fulfill its duty towards the Palestinian people and to protect them from the crimes of occupation, brutality and to force the Israeli government to free the prisoners.

The demonstration raised Palestinian flags and pictures of the detained vice president of the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine Abduraheem Mulaweh and Marwan Al Barghouthi, the secretary general of the Fatah movement in the West Bank. They repeated slogans asking that the Israeli aggression end and asking the international community and human rights organizations to play its role in pressurizing the Israeli government to free the prisoners.

The committee set up a camp in front of the UN  base to continue for three days in which tens of residents will be staying and where the pictures of the prisoners are hung and hundreds of banners asking the UN to move to stop the Israeli aggression.

Kayed Al Ghoul, member of the PFLP told IslamOnline that the tent was set up in solidarity with Mulaweh and Barghouthi and the rest of the detainees. He said it was also to stress the unity of the Palestinian people who are defending their detained brothers and determined to set them free.

Al Ghoul said: “We are directing a message to the whole world that our people are determined to resist despite the detaining schemes of the occupation forces. During this demonstration, we have directed a letter to the United Nations Secretary General demanding that he does his job to free Saadat, Mulaweh and Al Barghouthi and show our discontent with the American stance which is completely biased towards the occupation and its crimes.”

He added that if the UN does not play its role it would be a shortcoming from its side. Al Ghoul said that the detention of Mulaweh is serious because he is a member of the PFLP’s executive committee.
