WASHINGTON
, June 23 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – American Hollywood
film director said that he understood why “suicide bombers” feel
the way they do but said that he is “against violence in these
matters” and against such operations because they kill innocent
people, reported Israeli newspaper the Jerusalem Post.
The
paper quoted the director in an interview he carried out with
show business daily Variety.
Stone,
who is also preparing a film on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat
said that “the settlements they are something else. The Israelis
have no business in the
West Bank
. The settlements have to be gotten out of the
West Bank
."
According
to Variety, Stone likened some of the Jews in the West bank to
"vigilantes of the Old West in
America
."
"We
need a third power to patrol the area, as was done in the '70s in the
confrontations between the Turks and Greeks," Stone said,
reported Jerusalem Post.
The
Israeli Foreign Ministry has expressed concern about the Stone film on
Arafat, worried it will be anti-Israeli and place Arafat in a positive
light, said the paper adding that the concern is compounded because of
Stone's name- appeal, and the fear this will give the film more
attention and credibility than it deserves.
Stone
told Variety that, regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "I
take no position. People think I'm pro one or the other."
Stone
interviewed Arafat for the film in March, and was photographed at the
time with a group of intellectuals, including Portuguese Nobel
Prize-winning author Jose Samarago, who were visiting Arafat in his
Ramallah compound. During that visit Samarago accused
Israel
of employing "Nazi tactics" against the Palestinians, said
the Post.
This
film was financed by Canal Plus in
Europe
, but does not yet have an outlet in the
U.S.
, said the paper.
