GENEVA,
June 15 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A U.N human rights expert
on Friday condemned the Israeli army's "serial" destruction
of homes and a practice of "walking through the walls"
during recent incursions into Palestinian territories.
In
a report on the situation in occupied Palestinian territories, Miloon
Kothari, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing,
slated a wide range of violations related to Palestinian living
conditions.
"The
policies of belligerent occupation and collective punishment have been
marked by land confiscations, punitive house demolitions, implantation
of settlements, the dismemberment of Palestinian territories through
the building of bypass roads ... and the control or theft of water and
other natural resources in the occupied territories," he said.
Kothari's
recommendations included reparations for Palestinians whose homes and
land had been confiscated, damaged or destroyed.
He
said he was ready to set up an agreed method of evaluating the costs
of housing rights violations.
The
U.N. special rapporteur said all the Israeli violations aimed to
consolidate land occupied in 1967.
"It
is ironic that the methods used to consolidate occupation have
accelerated under the guise of the Oslo peace accords," he added.
The
U.N. expert also accused Israel of "manipulating the ethnic
character of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip" with the
settlements.
"A
particularly destructive strategy has involved the use of missiles,
tanks, and the Israeli army's practice of 'walking through the walls'
used to serially damage homes," during incursions in February and
March, he added.
Kothari
said the international community had a duty to intervene and called
for an international protection force that would protect Palestinian
homes and land as its priority.
He
also reiterated calls for a halt to all settlement activity and the
dismantlement of Israeli settlements.
