JERUSALEM, June 9 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – One
Palestinian man was killed by the Israeli army and four Israeli
soldiers were wounded early Sunday, June 9, during an attack on a
military position next to the illegal Jewish settlement of Yitzhar
south of Nablus in the West Bank, on land occupied by Israel in 1967,
Israeli military sources said.
Two
of the soldiers were said to be in a serious condition. A previous
toll given by Israeli army radio had spoken of two Palestinians killed
and six Israelis wounded, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
The
Israeli occupation army launched a manhunt using helicopters for the
remaining attackers, said the radio. Residents of the settlement were
told to stay indoors.
An
attack Saturday, June 8, claimed by the military wing of the Islamic
Resistance Movement Hamas, left at least three Israelis dead and five
injured in the illegal West Bank settlement of Karmei Tzur north of
Hebron.
"A
unit of fighters from the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades on Saturday
infiltrated the Karmei Tzur settlement and opened fire with automatic
weapons and grenades on settlers, killing three of them and injuring
six, two of them seriously," the group said in a statement.
"One
of our fighters, whose name we will not yet disclose for security
reasons, fell as a martyr," Hamas said, vowing "not to
surrender to the enemy and continue the armed struggle."
The
Israeli military said one Palestinian gunman was shot dead and that
another escaped.
Four
Palestinians were also killed in two abortive attacks on the Gaza
Strip, sources on both sides said. The attacks were also claimed by
the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.
The
Yitzhar attack came just as Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon left
for Washington to meet U.S. President George W. Bush.
The
United Nations Security Council has issued two resolutions, 242 and
338 which calls for the Israeli withdrawal of all territories occupied
in 1967.
The
European Union (EU) has also barred trade with the areas occupied by
Israel in 1967. “Products originating in the Israeli settlements in
the West-Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, by
Notice published on 23 November 2001 (OJ C 328 p.6), the Commission
has drawn importers' attention to the fact that these cannot benefit
from the preferential import regime established in favor of products
originating in Israel,” the EU says on its website.
On
February 19, a group of high-ranking Israeli security officials
announced that they will campaign for a unilateral withdrawal from the
Palestinian occupied territories.
The
campaign was based on a proposal by the Council for Peace and Security
calling for an immediate pullback from the Gaza Strip and most of the
West Bank, AFP reported.
It
envisages the dismantling of 40 illegal Jewish settlements and the
immediate establishment of a Palestinian state.
It
also calls for the start of negotiations with the Palestinians,
without the precondition that violence first be stopped.
The group includes 1,000 top-level reserve
generals, colonels and officials from the internal and external
security agencies, Shin Bet and Mossad, reported BBC’s online news
service.
