PARIS,
June 6 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Following the murder of a
teenage girl by a fellow student who said he had been inspired by the
U.S. horror movie “Scream”, a French politician called Wednesday,
June 5, for the film to be immediately withdrawn.
Didier
Fischer, a Socialist candidate in upcoming parliamentary elections
from the Yvelines region west of Paris, said all DVDs and video
cassettes should be taken down from shelves following the killing late
Monday. He also proposed the creation of an unarmed police force for
schools, Agence France-Presse (AFP) said.
A
17-year-old high school student was in custody Wednesday, facing
charges for the murder of a 15-year-old friend he repeatedly stabbed
in woods near her home in the western French city of Nantes.
The
youth, who cannot be named under French law, covered his face with the
Scream mask, based on the painting by Edvard Munch, before
stabbing the girl several times, the British daily newspaper, the Independent
reported.
Arrested
at his parents’ home just minutes later, the young man said he had
been inspired by the film “Scream”, and he was found with a bag
containing a model of the mask shown in the film as well as a knife
believed by investigators to have been the weapon used in the attack,
AFP said.
“I
was obsessed with living through the same experience as the heroes of Scream,”
the boy told French police. “I wanted to kill like them.”
While
staying with his grandmother, the boy, from a wealthy family, had
repeatedly watched videos of the three Scream movies, a trilogy
created by U.S. director Wes Craven, takes the standard
psychotic-killer-on-the-loose story and infuses it with references to
other horror films and the genre in general.
The
movies, intended as a spoof of horror films, follow the murderous
careers of young, wealthy U.S. college students, the Independent
said. The villain himself is portrayed as having been
influenced by such movies for his own killing spree.
Judicial
officials said late Wednesday the youth had been officially placed
under investigation, the first step to formal charges being laid, and
had been remanded in custody after a brief court appearance. He risks
a life behind bars.
The
French boy’s victim was a school friend, Alice Beauperè, who was
still alive when she was discovered by a neighbor. The victim was able
to identify her assailant before succumbing to her wounds in hospital.
According
to the Independent, the Scream movies have been blamed
for inciting violence in the past. This latest incident comes
alongside a series of gang rapes in France, including one by eight
youths from wealthy backgrounds in Lyons, that have been blamed on the
influence of violent pornographic movies
