Miss Israel Against Palestinian State

Miss Israel’s national costume

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 23 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – In the National Costume show for Miss Universe delegates at Bellas Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico Tuesday, May 21, Miss Israel’s dress, which showed a map of Israel on the front and the Israeli flag in the back, showed her rejection of the idea of a Palestinian state.

In a tougher stance than that of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who has placed many hurdles in the way of a Palestinian state, and contrary to U.S. President George W. Bush’s demand for a Palestinian state, Yamit Har-Noy chose to adopt the right-wing Likud Party’s Central Committee’s rejection of establishing a Palestinian state in the re-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Miss Israel’s controversial national costume was seen as an emphasis of the Israeli government’s hardline position, news agencies reported.

Miss Egypt’s national costume

Meanwhile, Sally Shaheen, Miss Egypt 2002, wore a dress that showed the Egyptian flag on the torso and the word “peace” in all world languages on the white skirt, reflecting her country’s commitment to peace.

Miss United States, Shauntay Hinton, wore a firefighter’s costume, in a clear reminder of the September 11 attacks on New York and outside Washington.

Delegates will compete for the title of Miss Universe 2002 in San Juan May 29. The 51st annual Miss Universe competition will be broadcast live the same day at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.
