WASHINGTON
D.C., May 22 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) A year after the
controversial disappearance of Washington D.C. intern Chandra Levy,
D.C. police have announced that skeletal remains found in a park they
belong to the 24-year old intern.
Levy
disappeared on April 30, 2001 instigating a scandal that rocked former
U.S. Congressman Gary Condit, who was believed to have had an affair
with the intern.
Police
Wednesday announced that the human remains found in Rock Creek Park,
where the intern was believed to have jogged on occasion prior to her
disappearance, were identified as Levy’s remains through dental
records, CNN’s online news service reported.
Levy
disappeared from her Dupont Circle apartment without a trace last year
with all of her belongings still in tact. She had even been preparing
for a trip and had left her packed luggage in her apartment before
walking out the door. It is not believed that Levy was kidnapped from
her apartment, but rather, that she left willingly.
The remains were found in a wooded park that traverses the nation's
capital, near Levy's home.
The
young Californian had served as an intern at the Bureau of Prisons. While
still a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gary Condit,
admitted to having an affair with Levy - after first having lied about
it. The scandal that emerged after Levy's disappearance was an issue
in the March election campaign in which, Condit, 54, lost his seat.
The
dismembered skeleton was reported to have been discovered at 9:30 A.M
Wednesday morning by a man walking his dog in the park, Ramsey stated.
"My
understanding is that the remains are not all in one location."
"This
is heavily wooded area, very easy to conceal something here,"
said Ramsey, who described the area as a "very difficult place to
search," CNN reported.
The
2,820 acre wooded park was searched during the first days after
Levy’s disappearance but yielded no results and no leads. No
suspects have ever been named in the case. Condit was questioned and
searched during the early days of the investigation but was never
charged with any crimes nor was ever named as a suspect.
