CHICAGO,
May 12 (IslamOnline) – Members of Chicago's Muslim community held a
fundraising dinner Saturday night to raise money for Gujarat relief
efforts. Prior to the May 11th event, two more were also held but this
one was by far the most successful.
Businessman
and philanthropist Khan Lateef Khan organized the event. Khan is also
the publisher and editor-in-chief of Munsif, the daily
Urdu newspaper in India.
Samad
Patel, a community activist, said that what is happening in Gujarat is
not a mere communal riot but an organized form of ethnic cleansing,
which is being perpetrated by criminals with the full help and
connivance of the state machinery.
He
said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in India claims to be
secular but in reality is not and is responsible for the ongoing
carnage against the Muslims. He said Muslims must establish good
relations with all communities, including Hindus, in order to prevent
another such tragedy from happening again.
Manzoor
Shah Khan, in an emotional speech, said that never before in the
annals of history have civilians been massacred as they are being
executed in Gujarat. He said he does not understand why a country with
the third largest army in the world tolerates paramilitary terrorist
organizations like the Rashtiya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal,
and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Lashing
out at the Narendra Modi government, he called for his (Modi
government's) immediate dismissal. He demanded that all paramilitary
forces in India should be disarmed and that those police officers, who
took part in the ongoing holocaust, be punished and confined.
Sanga,
a member of a South Asian Christian organization, urged the Muslims to
work with people of all faiths in their fight for peace and justice.
He said that only those who stand together would succeed.
"Nothing will happen unless and until we unify," he said.
Faisal
Hammouda, who also conducted the fundraising event, said that Muslims
reached the pinnacle of achievement in civilization because they
upheld the principles of Islam.
He
opined that Muslims are suffering because they have moved away from
those lofty principles. He said that American Muslims have to assure
the Muslims in Gujarat that we hear their cries and will support them.
Khan
Lateef Mohammed Khan, in his keynote speech, said that what has
happened in Gujarat can happen to anyone and anywhere. He appealed to
the audience to donate wholeheartedly for their suffering brethren and
that he will personally match their contributions.
"We
will not complain but, Allah willing, we will rebuild Gujarat from the
ashes," he said.
A
video documenting the atrocities committed on the Gujarat Muslims and
interviews with the victims was also shown the event.
